NEMA suspends 4 officials involved in Embakasi LPG plant licensing

In February last year, a record decision was made to issue the proposed project with an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) license.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 3 – The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has suspended four officials involved in the licensing of the Embakasi LPG plant that exploded killing 3 people.

In a statement, the authority’s Board Chairman Emilio Mugo indicated that the director environmental compliance, acting deputy director compliance, the Senior Environmental officer and the Head of Environmental Impact Assessment should step aside immediately.

He stated that in February last year, a record decision was made to issue the proposed project with an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) license.

He pointed out that after a thorough assessment of the licensing procedure the NEMA board of management noted some serious gaps in the license issuance to the LPG plant in question.
