NASA parallel tallying centre in Kenya and clouds, Raila says on solo debate

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 24 – The National Super Alliance (NASA) presidential flag bearer Raila Odinga on Monday refused to confirm or deny claims they have a parallel tallying centre in neighbouring Tanzania.

Odinga was appearing solo on a live presidential TV debate after President Uhuru Kenyatta failed to turn up.

Whether NASA had a parallel tallying centre in Tanzania, he responded: “In Kenya, in Kenya, and in Kenya … and in the clouds.”

He, however, said this was a non-issue if the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) conducts a free, fair and credible election.

“Why should that be an issue?” the Opposition leader asked during the debate.

He reiterated his claims that security agencies and specifically the military was going to be irregularly deployed during the next month’s general election.

The Opposition leader has recently been engaged in a public spat with the Acting Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiangi over securing the poll and the number of party agents who will be allowed in the polling stations.

Already, the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission has called a meeting with political parties on Wednesday in a bid to clarify the number of agents it will allow in each polling centre during next month’s General Election.

The Opposition has insisted that they will have five agents, as part of their adopt-a-polling-station strategy, “to guard flag bearer Odinga’s votes.”

IEBC Chief Executive and Secretary Ezra Chiloba told Capital FM News that only one agent per candidate will be allowed at each polling station on August 8.

“We have not changed our position at all. The people who will be allowed into the polling station will be the authorised persons and the law specifies that each political party shall be represented by one agent at the polling station.”
