NAIROBI, Kenya, May 5 – The Students Organisation of Nairobi University (SONU) chairman Babu Owino was to appear in court on Thursday to face charges of assaulting a fellow student.
According to police, Owino was arrested Wednesday and spent the night at the Kilimani Police Station after a complaint from the student, in a case that has been going on for almost a month now.
The complaint recorded with the police showS that the incident occurred in March at a fuel station in Kileleshwa in Nairobi, at the height of SONU election campaigns.
“He was arrested yesterday and will appear in court today, we cannot discuss the details of his arrest but he will be charged with assault,” Nairobi Police Boss Japheth Koome told Capital FM News.
Owino was re-elected in the contested SONU elections that left over 30 students expelled after violent chaos over the poll outcome.
The students had also burnt their union offices and three hostels in protests.
Police say they are looking for more accomplices of Owino to also face similar charges.
