According to the World Health Organisation there are about 140 million women and girls who have gone through the cut and has expressed fears that three million girls are at risk every year.
Though FGM is criminalised in Kenya, it continues to be carried out among certain Kenyan communities which include Kuria, Kisii, Maasai, Embu and Meru.
Several interventions such as alternative rite of passage for girls have been introduced to protect the girls from the real cut but this has still not stopped the practice.
