NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 23 – The Orange Democratic Movement has nominated Moses Kajwang’ the younger brother to the late Homa Bay Senator Otieno Kajwang’ to be the party’s flag bearer in the by-elections scheduled for February 12 next year.

ODM National Elections Board chairperson Judy Pareno says several factors including the report on a scientific survey carried out in Homa Bay were considered leading to Kajwang’ being chosen.

Pareno who was accompanied by board members Amana Mwajirani, Nancy Abisai and Hellen Katangie said the nomination was a unanimous decision by the board.

The Board will now proceed to issue Kajwang’ with a certificate to allow him to present his nomination papers to the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission in January next year.

The party had been given a lifeline after High Court judge Justice George Odunga barred the IEBC from implementing a directive requiring participating political parties to submit names of their candidates by Friday last week.

The party had earlier written to the IEBC protesting what it referred to as short notice and later, the board met seven aspirants vying for the seat.

The party’s nomination exercise was two weeks ago disrupted when youths stormed Homa Bay County Assembly hall, tore up ballot papers and kicked ballot boxes in the full glare of the media, forcing officials to call of the exercise.

Following the incident the NEB asked the IEBC for an additional two weeks to conduct the nomination exercise for the by-election.

ODM blamed the commission for the chaos saying that the IEBC did not provide enough time for the process to be conducted properly.
