CHUKA, Meru, Aug 26 – Deputy President William Ruto has said the Government will remain focused on development and improvement of people’s living standards.

He said time for politicking is over and it is now time leaders focus on implementation of the programs they promised the people during the last campaigns.

Ruto said opposing politics will not in any way affect their will to deliver services to Kenyans.

The Deputy President said the Government will establish more irrigation schemes in Arid and Semi Arid Lands (ASAL) areas to guarantee food security.

Speaking during a thanks-giving ceremony for Igambangombe MP Muthomi Njuki, Ruto said it is through initiation of irrigation schemes that residents in arid areas could engage in serious farming to uplift their living standards.

The Deputy President stated that the initiative will ensure that food is provided to the country’s expanding population.

He said the Government intends to put under irrigation one million acres of land across the country.

“We want to produce enough food through irrigation so as to end the problem of hunger witnessed in arid areas,” Ruto said.

The Deputy President said plans were underway to put up a dam in Tharaka Nithi County which will generate 700 megawatts of electricity and put over 250 acres of land under irrigation.

“It is our commitment as Government to put at least 250 acres of land under irrigation in Tharaka Nithi county,” the Deputy President said.

He asked the management of Chuka University to use their 500 acre piece of land for demonstration in the area, saying the Government will make available funds for the demonstration purposes.

“I have authorized Chuka University with 500 acres to start a farm for demonstration before the end of the year. It is through irrigation that we can get rid of hunger and poverty,” said Ruto.

He said the Jubilee Government has undertaken to institute measures to comprehensively address pastoralists’ concerns in the socioeconomic and political context.
