Kabras coach Katywa sympathises with Nondies tough start to Kenya Cup season after thrashing them on matchweek two

NAIROBI, Kenya, December 10 – Kabras Sugar RFC coach Carlos Katywa admits that he sympathises with Nondies’ tough start to the 2023/24 Kenya Cup season despite thrashing them 40-0 on match week 2 on Saturday afternoon at Impala Club.

Katywa admitted their opponents had it all to do following their 45-8 loss to Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) RFC in their first match of the season last weekend.

“It’s a battle of mixture of emotions when it comes to this particular game…we started like a house on fire. We went through our processes very well, also knowing that we were coming on the backdrop of Nondies coming off a loss against KCB. They’ve been hurting from these two very big games for them…really feel sorry for them,” Katywa said.

Despite his soft spot for their opponents, there was no such approach from his charges on the Impala Grounds pitch who absolutely tore apart Nondies from the first whistle.

Captain George Nyambua led the way with a hattrick of tries, beginning with a brace of converted tries in the first half within which was sandwiched an unconverted one by Lameck Ambetsa.

Nyambua put the ball over the white chalk early in the second half with Ntabeni Dukisa with his third conversion of the afternoon for the Kenya Cup defending champions.

There was still time for two more tries from Collins Indeche and Griffins Chao, providing Dukisa with more conversions to feast from.

Their dominant showing notwithstanding, Katywa admitted his charges are not the finished product just yet.

“We became complacent after about 20 minutes and then we started to commit silly plays. We were not executing well and handling errors is an area of concern. There was a time you looked at the game and didn’t understand why we did some of the things that we did. At the end of the day, it is five points…away from home…40 points and we didn’t concede so I am very proud of the boys when it comes to defence,” the national rugby 15s assistant coach said.

Following their win, the three-time Kenya Cup champions remain perched at the top of the log with 10 points – same as second and third placed KCB and Menengai Oilers – although the sugar millers boast of a superior points difference.
