Kubu the hero as Kabras beat Quins to win Prinsloo Sevens

NAIROBI, Kenya, August 6 – National rugby 15s player Jone Kubu scored a try and assisted another as Kabras Sugar contained a last-minute onslaught from Kenya Harlequins to win 10-5 in the final of the Prinsloo Sevens on Sunday evening in Nakuru.

Kubu played in Bryceson Adaka for the opening try in the first half before adding another in the early stages of the second half as Lucky Dewald scored a consolation for Quins in the final minutes of the game.

The win marks the sugar millers’ second consecutive trophy in the National Sevens Circuit, following last month’s triumph at the Driftwood Sevens in Mombasa.

Enroute to the final, they had dismissed of three-time champions Kenya Commercial Bank (KCB) 15-0 in the semis whereas Quins had dispatched the circuit champions Menengai Oilers 14-0.

The sugar millers backs coach Felix Ayange attributed their successes thus far to discipline and respect for their opponents.

“You cannot go around trashing everyone just because you are winning. I think that (discipline) has worked for us,” Ayange said.

Kabras lead the National Sevens Circuit standings with 63 points, seven more than second-placed KCB who clinched third place at the Nakuru Athletic Club with a 22-12 win over the Oilers.

Meanwhile, despite failing to land his hands on the Prinsloo trophy, Quins coach Paul Murunga was impressed with the show from his charges at the three-day event.

“We didn’t start the circuit so well…we lost in the semis to Kabras in Kisumu (Dala Sevens) then in Mombasa (Driftwood Sevens), we finished sixth. So, we had to go back to the drawing board and work on our mistakes,” Murunga said.

Mwamba outclass Leos

In the fifth place final, Mwamba RFC beat Strathmore University Leos 22-19 as Masinde Muliro University won 15-12 against their fellow students, Daystar University Falcons, in the Challenge Final.

Kisumu RFC were winners of the 13th place final, walloping their neighbours, Western Bulls, 41-5.

In the women’s division, it was a bad day in the office for Mwamba as Impala Ladies came from 5-0 down to win 10-5.

Diana Omosso gave Kulabu the lead in the seventh minute before Sharon Auma equalised early in the second half with a try of her own.

After a period of end-to-end action, the Ngong Road-based side carried the day courtesy of another Auma try.

Action now shifts to the Christie Sevens, scheduled for next weekend at the RFUEA Grounds in Nairobi.
