India and Bangladesh Forge Stronger Ties Across Various Fronts

During a bilateral summit on September 6, 2022, both leaders signed pivotal agreements, marking a new chapter in their relationship.

The partnership between India and Bangladesh has grown significantly, encompassing diverse areas of cooperation Under Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

During a bilateral summit on September 6, 2022, both leaders signed pivotal agreements, marking a new chapter in their relationship.

Water Sharing Agreement for Kushiyara River

The signing of an agreement concerning the withdrawal of water from the cross-border Kushiyara River marks a milestone in bilateral cooperation.

According to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, “This agreement reflects our commitment to sustainable development and mutual prosperity. By sharing water resources equitably, we are laying the foundation for long-term collaboration in addressing regional challenges.”

Collaboration in Space Technology

In a joint statement, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina highlighted the importance of collaboration in space technology, stating, “Our partnership in space science and technology is emblematic of our shared commitment to innovation and progress. Through joint research and development initiatives, we aim to harness the potential of space technology for the benefit of our people.”

Railways and IT Systems Cooperation

Indian Railways Minister emphasized the significance of the MoUs signed between Indian Railways and Bangladesh Railway, stating, “These agreements pave the way for enhanced cooperation in training and technology transfer. By sharing our expertise in railway operations and IT solutions, we are facilitating the modernization of Bangladesh’s railway infrastructure.”

Training and Broadcasting Initiatives

Prime Minister Narendra Modi underscored the importance of educational exchanges, stating, “Education is the cornerstone of our partnership. By offering training opportunities to Bangladeshi professionals in India, we are investing in the future of our relationship.” Additionally, Prasar Bharati CEO emphasized the cultural aspect of collaboration in broadcasting, saying, “Through joint programming and content exchange, we are fostering greater understanding and appreciation of each other’s cultures.”

Maitree Super Thermal Power Project

Indian Minister of Power highlighted the strategic significance of the Maitree Super Thermal Power Project, stating, “This joint venture exemplifies the depth of our energy partnership. By providing clean and reliable electricity to Bangladesh, we are contributing to the country’s economic development and energy security.”

Rupsha Rail Bridge Inauguration

Bangladeshi Minister of Transportation emphasized the economic impact of the Rupsha rail bridge, stating, “The inauguration of this bridge opens up new opportunities for trade and commerce, particularly for the Mongla port. By improving connectivity, we are facilitating economic growth and creating new avenues for cooperation.”

Concessional Loans and Defence Procurement

Indian Minister of Finance highlighted India’s commitment to supporting Bangladesh’s development, stating, “Through concessional loans and grants, we are assisting Bangladesh in realizing its development goals. Our cooperation in defence procurement further strengthens our strategic partnership and enhances regional security.”

Fairway Development and Human Resource Development

Bangladeshi Minister of Maritime Affairs emphasized the importance of fairway development for maritime trade, stating, “The development of the fairway enhances Bangladesh’s connectivity with India and other regional partners. By investing in infrastructure, we are creating new opportunities for trade and investment.”

Bilateral Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA)

Both leaders expressed optimism about the upcoming negotiations on the CEPA, with Indian Minister of Commerce stating, “The CEPA will provide a framework for deeper economic integration between our two countries.

By liberalizing trade and investment, we aim to boost economic growth and create jobs for our people.”

In summary, the partnership between India and Bangladesh is built on shared values and mutual interests, with both countries committed to fostering cooperation and prosperity in the region.
