NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 23 – President William Ruto has appointed his predecessor’s first transport minister, Eng. Michael Kamau, Chairperson of the Nation Health and Insurance Fund (NHIF) board for a three-year term.
The appointment contained in a Gazette Notice dates December 23 took effect immediately revoking Lewis Nguyai’s tenure who was appointed under President Uhuru Kenyatta.
In exercise of the powers conferred by section 4 (1) (a) of the National Health Insurance Fund Act, I, William Samoei Ruto, President and Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Forces of the Republic of Kenya, appoint— Michael Kamau (ENG.) to be the Chairperson of the National Health Insurance Fund, for a period of three years, with effect from the 23rd December, 2022.

Kamau was suspended from Kenyatta’s Cabinet on March 28, 2015 and was charged in June 2015 with two counts of abuse of office and failure to comply with applicable procedures and guidelines relating to management of public funds.
He was cited in the “List of Shame” by the then Director of Prosecution Keriako Tobiko among the ministers who engaged in corruption.
Eng. Kamau was accused of turning a blind eye when the ministry engineers and construction company Kundan Singh ignored a consultant’s plan when building a road in Bungoma County, resulting in misappropriation of public funds.
His case came up on November 12 and was being handled by prosecution counsels Verah Hamisi and Kahoro Terry.
