NAIROBI, Kenya, Jan 14 – President Uhuru Kenyatta on Tuesday reassigned the Foreign Affairs docket to Defence Cabinet Secretary Raychelle Omamo in changes that will see CS Monica Juma move to Defence headquarters.

The two Cabinet Secretaries are among four Cabinet members reassigned portfolios in changes announced Tuesday.

Omamo exits the powerful Defence docket after 7 years in the helm where she oversaw a myriad of reforms, but it is under her watch that the country lost the largest number of soldiers in Somalia.

Ironically, she moves to the world of diplomacy barely a day to the commemoration of El Adde attack, when Al-Shabaab militants overrun a Kenya Defence Forces military camp, killing more than 100 soldiers.

While KDF is serving in Somalia under the African Union Mission to Somalia (AMISOM), this remains the deadliest attack against them.

But under her belt is a series of reforms that include increasing the military presence within the country.

In December 2019, President Kenyatta launched Modika Barracks, one of the infantry formations in the Kenya Army, in a move meant to enhance the presence of the military within the country’s troubled North-Eastern region.

CS Juma, on her part, led the lobbying of the country to be endorsed as a candidate for the UN Security Council nonpermanent seat for the 2021-2022 term.

She managed to convince the African Union and several countries, particularly in the Caribbean.

The President also confirmed Ukur Yatani as the substantive National Treasury Cabinet Secretary and reassigned Labour docket to Water and Sanitation Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui.

Chelugui’s Water ministry was assigned to Health Cabinet Secretary Sicily Kariuki whose docket will now be headed by former Nyeri Senator Mutahi Kagwe.

Kenyatta also nominated former Kenya Association of Manufacturers (KAM) Chief Executive Officer Betty Maina to be the Industrialization Cabinet Secretary.

Munya, who headed the Industrialization ministry was moved to the Agriculture Ministry, the President dismissing CS Mwangi Kiunjuri who was lately seen more aligned to the Tanga Tanga political wing that is commanded by DP William Ruto.
