Protest over MPs’ pay turns into a pig deal

Scores of others including Mwangi were also beaten and arrested.

“These policemen should be staging this demonstration with us and demanding for a pay hike. They should not be used to stop us from pursuing our cause and they are not even MPs,” said Maria Juma.

Police in the meantime had a difficult time controlling the pigs that were busy licking the bloody scene.

The demonstrators had vowed not to leave Parliament’s gates until the MPs lent them an ear.

“We are going to occupy Parliament. They cannot be calling us thieves while they are busy stealing our money. We pay taxes so they should stop clamouring for a higher pay even before they serve us,” said David Wafula.

Renowned activists like Timothy Njoya, Maina Kiai, Okiya Omtatah, Yash Pal Ghai and George Orara were also present.

Njoya led the group in a word of prayer at Freedom Corner before the youths in their hundreds made their way into the Central Business District.

“We want to pray for Parliament so that the MPs are cleansed from their wanton greed,” he said.

Omtata also asked the MPs to respect the Constitution and take their grievances to the Industrial Court accusing them of acting like gods.

“We are here to show MPs that they are not the law above themselves. They are not demi-gods who should be worshipped and so they must operate within the law,” he argued.
