NAIROBI, Kenya, Sep 20 – A Somali national who admitted possessing bombs, suicide vests and being a member of the Al Shabaab terror network has been jailed for 59 years by a Kenyan court.

Abdimajid Yassin Mohammed, 26, also known as Ali Hussein was jailed on his admission of guilt by Magistrate Lucy Nyambura after he was arrested on Friday last week in Nairobi’s Eastleigh estate.

While passing the judgement, Nyambura said the court has taken into consideration the country’s national security and the spate of violence that has rocked the country in imposing the harsh sentences.

“The accused is not remorseful and I convict him on his own plea of guilty,” Nyambura said.

The court also said the man had not shown any remorse for his action which the court said would have caused massive deaths and mass destruction.

“One would shudder at the mass destruction the weapons would have caused had they been put to use,” she said.

“He has not shown any remorse and the court will not be lenient with him.” The magistrate said after Mohammed, in mitigation, said that he was only worried for his two wives and two children who are in Somalia. And that one of the wives is also pregnant.

“One would shudder at the mass destruction the weapons would have caused had they been put to use,” she said.

The case was heard under heavy security at the Anti Terrorism Police Unit offices.

Mohammed also admitted that he was in possession of 12 hand grenades and 481 bullets but denied that he was in possession of four AK-47 rifles.

His co-accused, Omar Abdi Adan, 24, also known as Salman Abdi, denied 10 charges against him.
