NAIROBI, Kenya, August 24 – The national women’s volleyball team, Malkia Strikers, are the new queens of Africa after they defeated Egypt 3-0 in the final of the Africa Nations Volleyball Championships in Yaounde, Cameroon on Thursday night.
The first set was a hotly contested one with both teams running each other close before coach Luizomar de Moura’s charges eventually won 25-22.
It was just the encouragement that Kenya needed, coming back guns blazing in the second set to win 25-20 as the Pharaohs seemed a pale shadow of themselves.
The third set was merely a final nail in the Egyptians’ coffin as the Kenyans raced to a 16-8 lead before the North Africans reduced the deficit to 16-10.
However, there was no whiff of a comeback as Malkia eventually won 25-14 to dethrone immediate former champions, Cameroon, in their turf.
With that, Kenya will be making another appearance at the Olympic Games where they will hope to fare better at next year’s edition in Paris, France.
