NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 18 – Athletics Kenya (AK) federation are among six finalists nominated by World Athletics for the Member Federation Award.
The federation was lauded for being at the forefront of leveraging on the power of sports – specifically athletics – to spearhead climate change efforts in the country.
“Athletics Kenya was the first member federation to sign the Sport for Climate Action Framework, underlining the governing body’s position at the forefront of climate action in Kenya,” WA said.
WA added: “Since August 2021, when it signed the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, Athletics Kenya has installed four air quality sensors at Kasarani Stadium, Nairobi National Park, Nyayo Stadium and Nakuru Athletics Club.”
World Athletics also acknowledged the federation’s efforts towards improving the coverage of athletics by facilitating a media development programme in May.
“ As well as staging the only Continental Tour Gold meeting in Africa, Kenya also hosted a media development programme for the African region in 2022. At the elite end of the sport, Kenya topped the medals table at the African Championships, winning 10 gold medals, five silver and eight bronze,” the confederation said.
They added: “Eliud Kipchoge also lowered his own marathon world record, while Faith Kipyegon and Emmanuel Korir added world titles to the Olympic gold medals they won last year.”
The Member Federation award recognizes member federations who have used their influence and the power of athletics to create a positive impact beyond the track and field.
Other member federations nominated include Korea Association of Athletics Federations, Jamaica Athletics Administrative Association, Guam Track and Field Association, Confederecao Brasileira de Atletismo (Brazil) and Real Federacion Epsanola de Atletismo (Spain).
The winning federation will be announced early next month.
