DCI arrests suspected robber in Mtwapa amid Coast security crackdown

DCI arrests David Juma Mweru in Mtwapa in connection with multiple robbery incidents. Ammunition recovered as security crackdown on Coast gangs intensifies.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 23 — Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended a man wanted in connection with multiple robbery incidents in Mtwapa, marking a significant breakthrough in the ongoing security operations along the Coast region.

The suspect, identified as David Juma Mweru, had been under surveillance by security agencies for his alleged involvement in a series of robbery cases and had evaded capture by frequently changing his hideouts.

Acting on intelligence, detectives tracked him down and arrested him without incident.

During a search of his residence, officers recovered five rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition wrapped in a yellow carrier bag, raising concerns over his potential involvement in violent criminal activities.

“The momentum of the ongoing security operation across the Coast region continues to gather pace, delivering yet another decisive blow to criminal networks that have long sought to destabilize the tranquility of our coastal communities,” the DCI said in a statement.

The suspect is currently in police custody undergoing further processing as investigations continue to establish the full extent of his criminal network and possible accomplices.

The DCI reiterated its commitment to dismantling criminal gangs and restoring public safety, warning that there will be no safe haven for criminals operating in the Coast region or elsewhere.

“This ongoing operation sends a clear and unequivocal message: criminal gangs operating within the Coast region and across the country will find no safe haven. The DCI remains steadfast, vigilant and unrelenting in its mission to safeguard lives, protect property and restore public confidence,” the statement added.

Authorities continue to urge members of the public to provide information to security agencies to support ongoing operations against crime in the region.
