NAIROBI, KENYA, Jan 16 – The Kenya National Examination Council (KNEC) has introduced major innovations in the administration of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations, aiming to improve flexibility, inclusivity, and digital integration in the assessment process.
According to the Ministry of Education, one of the key changes is the introduction of a July KCSE examination series, which will provide candidates and institutions with greater flexibility in planning and sitting for their exams. This move is expected to ease congestion in the examination calendar and offer an alternative examination period for students who may require it.
To enhance inclusivity in the education sector, KNEC has also introduced the use of Orbit Readers for visually impaired candidates during examinations and assessments. These digital devices will assist students in reading and responding to exam questions more efficiently, ensuring that they receive the same quality of examination experience as their peers.
In a further shift towards digital transformation, KNEC will now administer KCSE Computer Studies practical examinations through an e-assessment mode. This move aligns with global trends in education, making computer-based assessments more accessible and efficient while reducing logistical challenges associated with traditional examination methods.
To facilitate a smooth transition to these changes, KNEC has scheduled a series of online sensitization meetings for key stakeholders. On January 16, 2025, the first session will be held for Regional Directors of Education (RDEs), TSC Regional Directors (TSC-RDs), County Directors of Education (CDEs), TSC County Directors (TSC-CDs), and County Quality Assurance and Standards Officers (CQASOs), with 157 participants expected to attend.
On January 17, 2025, the second session will be dedicated to Centre Managers from schools offering Computer Studies, bringing together 2,649 participants to discuss the new e-assessment system. Finally, on January 21, 2025, a third session will be held for Centre Managers of schools with visually impaired candidates, with 18 participants expected.
KNEC has reiterated its commitment to ensuring the success of these reforms, emphasizing that they are designed to enhance efficiency, accessibility, and equity in Kenya’s education system.
