EACC urges parents to report Headteachers soliciting bribes for Form 1 admission

Principals in some prestigious schools are accused of soliciting bribes to admit Form 1 students.

NAIROBI, KENYA, JAN 6 – The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission of Kenya (EACC) has urged parents to report any high school principals soliciting money for admission letters in schools.

Eric Ngumbi, the spokesperson for EACC the commission has received complaints from parents over corrupt principals at some prestigious schools to get admisison.

“We have received reports of principals demanding money ranging from ten thousand to one hundred and fifty thousand, depending on the school’s reputation and the level of greed exhibited by the principal. Some of these cases involve leading girls’ schools,” he revealed.

Ngumbi condemned the actions, describing them as unethical and unjust, especially for parents who are already grappling with the financial burden of their children’s education.

“We urge parents to promptly inform EACC about any principal or individual soliciting or accepting bribes to facilitate the issuance of Form One admission letters,” he stressed.

In December, the Ministry of Education released the 2024 Form One placement results, accommodating over 1.4 million students in secondary schools. Education Cabinet Secretary Ezekiel Machogu announced that 1,400,329 students who had sat for the Kenya Certificate of Primary Education (KCPE) had secured Form One placements.

The placements are for 42,927 students in National Schools, 2,225 in Special Needs Education institutions, 274,746 in Extra County schools, 288,201 in County schools, and 792,230 in Sub-county schools.

Form one admission is scheduled to commence on January 15.
