NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 13 – The Kenya-China Alumni Association celebrated the 60th anniversary of the establishment of Kenya-China diplomatic relations in Nairobi on Saturday. The festivities encompassed three significant activities.
Firstly, the association unveiled a documentary showcasing the 60-year friendship between Kenya and China, highlighting the accomplishments and milestones achieved during this enduring relationship.
Secondly, outstanding alumni were recognized and honored with awards for their contributions to strengthening the enduring friendship between the two nations. These awards underscored the vital role played by individuals in fostering strong ties.
Thirdly, the event featured various artistic performances that underscored the rich cultural exchange between Kenya and China, highlighting the profound impact of this relationship on the artistic sphere.
Henry Rotich, the Chairperson of the association, emphasized that these celebrations were a testament to the progress, growth, and transformation that Kenya has experienced over the past six decades due to its enduring friendship with China. He cited remarkable advancements in education, infrastructure, industries, and the economy as outcomes of this strong partnership.
Rotich acknowledged the substantial support that Kenya has received from the Chinese people, particularly through scholarships provided to children from disadvantaged backgrounds. He noted that this partnership has endured challenges and continues to flourish based on collaboration, mutual respect, and shared aspirations.
Minister Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Chinese Embassy in Kenya, Zhang Zhizhong, expressed gratitude to the alumni for their contributions to strengthening China-Kenya relations. He welcomed the association’s decision to recognize the efforts of young people who have made a difference in various fields after returning to Kenya following their studies in China. These individuals serve as bridges between the two countries.
Counsellor Zhang highlighted that the Chinese government annually provides 50-60 scholarships to Kenya and expressed optimism that these young scholars would further enhance China-Africa relations.
While acknowledging the achievements of the past 60 years, Zhang stressed the importance of continued cooperation between Nairobi and Beijing. He expressed confidence in the new generation of young people who will play a crucial role in promoting China-Kenya friendship.
Zhang emphasized the significance of working together with African partners, believing that the 21st century holds great potential for China and Africa due to Africa’s abundant natural and human resources. He called for collaboration to achieve success in this century.
The Kenya-China Alumni Association comprises individuals who pursued education in China across various disciplines, including teachers, engineers, interpreters, translators, and international relations experts. These alumni have not only acquired degrees but have also embraced values such as hard work, dedication, innovation, and commitment to excellence, which have positively impacted countless lives in Kenya.
