Technical University of Mombasa students riot over alleged fee increment

MOMBASA, Kenya, Jun 26 – Technical University of Mombasa (TUM) students on Monday rioted against an alleged fee increment.

During the chaos, the student centre and several businesses including a fast-food restaurant were set ablaze.

Property of unknown value was also burnt down.

They were demonstrating against fee increment of up to Sh6,500 in the department of Engineering and Applied Sciences.

“Last week, we were surprised to find that fee had been increased. We tried to ask around, but no one was giving us a satisfying answer,” said a student.

Other students said the increment of the fees varied from one student to another.

“The school management said the student’s leaders had been involved in the changes, but our leaders said they were not aware,” they said.

At the same time, the students denied any involvement in the fire that brought down the Students’ Centre. They asked for through investigation.

They blamed the police for causing the mayhem.

TUM administration is yet to issue any communication in regards to the incident.
