State House: Recall of Moi’s cars done procedurally in 2020, Ruto had no role

State House Comptroller Kinuthia Mbugua clarified that the benefits were recalled procedurally in February 2020 when Moi died during the reign of immediate former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 14 — State House has demanded the retraction of a Daily Nation report suggesting President William Ruto had recalled late President Daniel Moi’s cars and staff after taking over the country’s leadership.

The report indicated that the William Ruto-led administration had withdrawn government vehicles and other public assets and redeployed staff attached to the late Head of State who had ruled the country for 24 years.

However, State House Comptroller Kinuthia Mbugua clarified that the benefits were recalled procedurally in February 2020 when Moi died during the reign of immediate former President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Mbugua described Nation’s article as “malicious and misleading.”

“The benefits of a retired President are clearly spelt out in the Presidential Benefits Act, 2003 with Section 5 specifically stating that pensions and other benefits of a retired president (which include cars and staff) are to be enjoyed only during his LIFE TIME,” Mbugua said.

“They cease from the day of his demise. Hence, pension and other benefits entitled to former President H.E. Daniel Arap Moi ceased on 4th February, 2020 in compliance with the provisions of the Presidential Retirement Benefits Act, 2003,” he added.

The State House Comptroller demanded an apology from the Daily Nation.

“We therefore take great exception to the story and demand an apology and retraction of the same,’’ he said.
