NAIROBI, Kenya, March 14- A brace from Maureen Wangui helped Nginda Girls register an emphatic 6-0 win over Mumbi Girls in the opening round of the COPA Coca Cola tournament in Muranga County on Saturday.
Nginda took an early 2-0 lead through goals from Lucy Mumbi and Mary Gichuhi in the 6th and 13th minutes respectively before Charity Adaraida completed the rout with two goals of her own in the 26th minute and the half hour mark.
In the boys’ matches, Gachianjiru High School fought off a gallant Njumbi High who they beat 3-2 in a competitive fixture.
Abdi Torre put Njumbi 1-0 ahead quarter of an hour into the game before his strike was cancelled out by Patrick Kimani three minutes later.
Torre struck again in the 53rd minute to help his team regain their advantage but Njumbi responded again a minute later through Alex Macharia to tie the game at 2-2.
Godwin Charagu broke the deadlock with half an hour remaining in the contest ensuring that Njumbi got their season off on a solid footing.
Gituru High School logged the highest score of the day by beating Koimbi Boys 7-0. A hattrick from Michael Omach, two strikes from Edward Njoroge and goals from Anthony Gichu and Said Mohammed sealed the deal for Gituru.
The tournament which is geared towards developing grassroots football kicked off in Laikipia, Garissa, Kakamega, Muranga, Migori, Tana River, Trans-Nzoia and Kericho.
The games continue this weekend in Kiambu, Nairobi, Uasin Gichu, Baringo, Siaya, Lamu, Nyeri, Meru and Kisii counties.
