BONN, Jun 14 – Peru will host the 2014 ministerial-level climate conference — a key meeting just one year before the deadline for a new, global deal on curbing global warming, the UN’s climate chief said Friday.

“COP 20 will be latinamerica,” Christiana Figueres said on her Twitter account, using the climate jargon for a conference of parties to the UN Framework Convention for Climate Change (UNFCCC).

“Pre COP in Venezuela. COP in Peru. Thanks to both for leadership,” she tweeted from Bonn, where a 12-day round of preparatory talks were winding down on the final day.

The 2013 COP is to be held in Warsaw, Poland from November 11-22.

Nations are negotiating a universal climate deal that must be signed in 2015 and come into operation in 2020.

The most ambitious plan yet deal with global warming-induced climate change, the 2015 pact will for the first time bind all the world’s nations to measurable targets for curbing Earth-warming greenhouse gas emissions.

The universal agreement will seek to limit global warming to a maximum 2 degrees Celsius (3.6 deg Fahrenheit) over pre-industrial levels.

The 20-year-old UN climate process is marked by a ministerial-level conference at the end of each year.
