NAIROBI, Kenya May 10 – Gor Mahia Patron Eliud Owalo has mourned the late legendary former club player, Allan Thigo, whom he described the greatest attacking midfielder of his generation.
In his condolence message, Owalo empathised with the family, friends, relatives of the late soccer legend, as well as the Kenyan soccer fraternity, noting that Thigo’s footprints in Kenyan soccer would be remembered for generations to come.
Owalo who is also former ICT Cabinet Secretary stated:
“It is with great sorrow that I have learnt of the death of Allan Thigo, one of Gor Mahia’s and Kenya’s greatest football legends.
“Thigo was a great attacking midfielder, nicknamed the “90-minute man”, “the midfield general”, “Ogango Wuon Pap” and “owner of the field”.
“Allan played for Gor Mahia and was the heartbeat of the club for a record 13 years between 1970-1982; besided serving as player-coach and leading Gor to an unbeaten league title in 1976. He also took Gor Mahia to the finals of the 1979 African Cup Winners’ Cup as player-coach.
“Thigo scored a record 88 goals for Gor Mahia and had 86 caps for the Kenya national soccer team, Harambee Stars.
“Kenyan soccer has lost the greatest attacking midfielder of his generation, known for beauty, flow, entertainment – connecting players and fans and orchestrating the finest midfield play ever displayed by a Kenyan soccer team.
“At this moment of grief, I lead the Gor Mahia family and entire Kenyan soccer fraternity in honouring a soccer idol whose footprint in Kenyan soccer will be remembered for generations to come.
“My deepest condolences to family, relatives, friends and the Kenyan soccer fraternity.
“May the Almighty rest his soul in eternal peace.”
