KWS to hire willing family members of fallen heroes

NAIROBI, Kenya Dec 16- The Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) has announced plans to honor the families of fallen heroes by recruiting willing members from next year.

Speaking during the commemoration of the 14th Conservation Heroes Day, Director General John Waweru said qualified members will be absorbed into the service.

“We are bringing on board qualified members of families of fallen heroes,” Waweru said, when he addressed families of fallen rangers.

“We have not forgotten (you), we are going through a restructuring process, when the time comes, we shall be able to consider those members that qualified within the families from the next financial year,” said Waweru.

A representative of the fallen hero’s families Seenoi Sisina welcomed the move and said KWS had been taking care of their families.

“Kenya wildlife service help me by catering for my eight children’s school fees,” said Sisina whose husband was shot dead by Lord Delamere’s grandson Thomas Cholmondeley.

Sisina vividly remembers how the news on the death of her husband Samson Ole Sisina, who was shot dead by Cholmondeley on April 19, 2005 while conducting an undercover investigation into the illegal bush-meat trade on the Delamere’s 19,000-hectare (48,000-acre) Soysambu ranch in Naivasha.

While Cholmondeley admitted killing Sisina, he said he was acting in self-defense after being fired upon first. Charges against Cholmondeley were terminated by the state and his widow’s attempt to challenge the order for the case to be re-opened was dismissed.

On Monday, she said that however, much she struggles to manage other bills, she is grateful that her children can still go to school.

Tourism Chief Administrative Secretary Joseph Boinnet, who represented Cabinet Secretary Najib Balala, said plans are underway to improve both the lives of the rangers guarding parks across the country even as they work on managing the parks.

“The ministry has great plans to improve all our national parks and game reserves, those that are managed by Kenya games itself or the country government, we want to collaborate to ensure the diversity of the parks is maintained,” said Boinnet.

The Kenya Wildlife Conservation hero’s day was celebrated this year in honor of the seventy-three fallen heroes who died while in line of duty.

The theme of the year “ Because of you our wildlife thrives “ represented the true dedication and selfless sacrifice by members of the Kenya Wildlife Service.
