Students die on school trip, more remain critical

NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 29 – Two students of Loreto Convent Msongari were killed in an accident on the Meru-Nanyuki highway on Friday afternoon.

Police said many more students were injured – some of them critically – in the road crash involving their school bus.

Efforts were being made to transfer the injured to hospitals in Nairobi due to the severe injuries sustained.

The Kenya Red Cross said their rescue team was dispatched to the scene and managed to transfer the injured to nearby hospitals for immediate medical attention.

“The school bus overturned at Subuiga in Meru.  Kenya Red Society is at the scene assisting.  There were 81 casualties including 76 students and five teachers.  They have been taken to St Triza Kirwa and the Meru General hospital,” the KRC said on Twitter.

“Five students are unconscious.  They need to be transferred urgently.  We appeal to people in the area to kindly assist.”

President Mwai Kibaki immediately sent a message of condolence to the families, friends and relatives of the students who lost their lives in the tragic accident on the Meru-Nanyuki highway.

The President termed the accident as a tragedy and wished all the affected families strength and fortitude to bear the great loss.

“At this time when you mourn the death of your loved ones, our prayers and thoughts are with you. May the Almighty God give you strength during this very trying time,” the Head of State said.

President Kibaki also wished quick recovery to the students who are being treated following the accident.
