Kenya’s SGR Train Passenger Traffic Up 13 Pct In Q3

NAIROBI, Nov. 17 (Xinhua) — The number of passengers who used Kenya’s standard gauge railway (SGR) train rose 13.8 percent in the third quarter, Kenya Railways Corporation (KRC) said on Friday.

Passenger traffic in the three months (July-September) stood at 701,132 amid a resurgence in economic activities, an increase from 615,760 in a similar period in 2022, according to KRC, which is responsible for the management of the industry.

In the first three months of 2023, the Chinese-built railway ferried 597,506 passengers, and in the second quarter, it ferried 652,299 passengers, said KRC.

This upward trend means that the train has ferried 1.95 million passengers in the first nine months to September, an increase from 1.74 million in a similar period in 2022, noted KRC.

The SGR passenger traffic is expected to hit a new high this year to surpass the 2.39 million recorded in 2022.

Meanwhile, the SGR cargo train hauled 1.73 million tonnes of cargo in the three months, an increase from 1.57 million tonnes in a similar period in 2022.
