Nov 13 – Bhutan today welcomes Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi for a two-day state visit to join the kingdom in celebrating the 70th birth anniversary of His Majesty the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, Jigme Singye Wangchuck. The trip underscores the enduring friendship, respect, and spiritual ties that have defined Bhutan–India relations for decades.
During the visit, Prime Minister Modi will be granted an audience with His Majesty The King, Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck, and hold talks with Prime Minister Tshering Tobgay. A key highlight will be the joint inauguration of the 1,020MW Punatsangchhu-II Hydroelectric Project, a flagship symbol of the two countries’ long-standing energy partnership, which has underpinned Bhutan’s economic growth and supported India’s clean energy ambitions.
In a statement, India’s Ministry of External Affairs described the trip as a “special gesture” to honour the Fourth Druk Gyalpo, whose reign from 1974 to 2006 is credited with laying the foundations of Bhutan’s modern development and strengthening cooperation with India in energy, trade, and security.
The visit coincides with the exposition in Bhutan of the sacred Piprahwa relics of Lord Buddha from India, which are on public display for veneration. Prime Minister Modi is expected to offer prayers to the relics at Tashichhodzong and attend the Global Peace Prayer Festival organised by the Royal Government of Bhutan, underscoring the countries’ shared Buddhist heritage and commitment to peace.
Officials said talks between the two sides will also explore new areas of cooperation, including fintech, innovation, entrepreneurship, and space technology. Proposals to enhance connectivity through rail links and inland waterways are on the agenda, reflecting a joint push to deepen economic integration and people-to-people exchanges.
The Indian foreign ministry said the visit would “further strengthen the unique and exemplary partnership marked by deep mutual trust, goodwill, and respect” between Bhutan and India.
