NAIROBI, Kenya, Jul 25 – Embakasi East Member of Parliament Babu Owino has spoken out against police brutality and the killing innocent Kenyans who are demanding their constitutional rights.
The MP who was speaking to journalists at the Milimani law Courts said that upon being arrested on Tuesday last week at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) says he was handcuffed and blindfolded before he was taken to a police station in Kirinyaga county.
He said that he was put in a police car but kept in a boot and that he was mistreated by the police who are supposed to protect the rights of all Kenyans.
He said that his coaccused whom they were booked with at the Kileleshwa police station they were tortured and their cellphones were taken away and upto date they have not been returned.
The MP through his lawyers Danstan Omari, Duncun Okatch and Samson Nyaberi,told the court that the prosecution has not supplied them with statement and documentary evidence the prosecution will be relying upon during the trial.
They said that the prosecution had promised to provide the same today when the matter came up for pretrial.
Senior principal magistrate Esther Kimilu directed that the document be supplied and the MP coaccused Calvin Otieno popularly known as Gaucho do make a report to any of police.ststion that’s within the jurisdiction.of Nairobi county.
Gaucho is said to have been tortured at Kileleshwa police station and the same officers have declined to take his statement.
The court further directed that the accused can make a report to independent police oversight authority (IPOA) who have the powers to investigate the police.
The matter will be mentioned on 3rd August 23 before the trial Magistrate Lucas Onyina.
