Koome says gun-brandishing police officer identified for action

Koome reiterated his commitment to sustain police reforms saying the officer in question does not portray the general conduct of police officers.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 25 — Inspector General of Police Japhet Koome says disciplinary measures have been instituted against a police officer filmed brandishing a gun at an unarmed motorist.

In a statement circulated by the National Police Service on Saturday, Koome reiterated his commitment to sustain police reforms saying the officer in question does not portray the general conduct of police officers.

“As a service, we are gravely concerned by, and strongly condemn, the misconduct displayed by the officer,” Koome stated.

“It should be clear that NPS shall not condone or protect any officer found engaging in abuse of his or her  powers and privileges, or any other action that can bring disrepute to the image of the police,” the IG warned.

He said the officer involved in the incident where he is heard threatening to deflate the tyres of the motorist’s car had been identified for action.

“We wish to inform the public that the officer has since been identified and the incident is currently being reviewed for appropriate internal disciplinary action.”

In the confrontation, the officer was recorded in an aggressive escalation despite the motorist’s continued appeal to plead his case.
