NAIROBI February 22 – Aga Khan University Hospital has unveiled its Home Care Service in a move aimed at enhancing access to quality healthcare.
This strategic initiative reflects the hospital’s dedication to bringing healthcare services closer to the communities it serves.
The hospital initially introduced home care services in 2022 as a pilot program, focusing primarily on oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment and palliative care.
The positive outcomes observed during the pilot phase have paved the way for a full-scale implementation.
During the launch ceremony, CEO Rashid Khalani emphasized the innovative nature of the new service, highlighting its ability to provide flexibility for patients and caregivers while ensuring the delivery of high-quality care.
“For patients requiring ongoing care, such as those undergoing treatment for chronic diseases, we are extending our services to their homes to eliminate any inconvenience they may face in accessing care,” stated Mr. Khalani. “Similarly, for working caregivers whose daily routines are disrupted by hospital visits, we offer the option to entrust us with their loved ones’ care at home.”
Dr. Julius Kipngetich, Group Regional CEO of Jubilee Holdings and Chief Guest at the launch event, commended Aga Khan University Hospital for its leadership in healthcare innovation. He noted the significance of home care services in advancing Universal Health Care goals and meeting the evolving needs of patients.
The Home Care Service encompasses a range of offerings, including nursing care, physiotherapy, chemotherapy, doctor visits, counselling psychology, nutrition support, palliative care, sample collection for laboratory testing, medication delivery, and wound care, among other follow-up services.
This initiative aligns with the hospital’s strategy to decentralize services, extending beyond its main facility to local neighbourhoods. It complements the existing outpatient network of 53 centers across Kenya and Uganda.
Currently available in Nairobi and surrounding areas, the Home Care Service is set to expand to additional regions, furthering Aga Khan University Hospital’s mission to provide accessible and comprehensive healthcare services.
