NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 12 — Detectives attached to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have apprehended four suspects in connection with a daring heist of Sh94.9 million transit cash which occurred on November 6 in Nairobi.
DCI announced the arrests on Sunday saying Sh9.1 million had so far been recovered following Saturday’s intelligence-led operation that involved multi-agency security teams.
An incident report booked at the Akila Police Station on November 6 indicated that the Sh 94.9 million being a day’s collection for Quickmart supermarket, was stolen by known employees of Wells Fargo company while on transit to Family bank.
Among those arrested is Ismael Patrick Gitonga, whom authorities identified as the owner and driver of motor vehicle which is believed to have been used to ferry the stolen cash from the escort van.
“He was arrested within Rongai area and the motor vehicle traced to Njiru within Kayole,” read a police report in part.
At Njiru area, two suspects identified as Michael Matolo Njeru and Samwel Onyango were apprehended after the duo were found in possession of the suspect motor vehicle while allegedly doing modifications of the vehicle to conceal it’s identity.
Further operation was extended to TRM area within Kasarani where another suspect namely Martin Nderi Nganga was arrested and a recovery of cash amounting to Sh9,101,300/= made at his rented house.
“A further recovery of an empty cash box was made within the forest next to Gataka market in Karen where the stolen cash is believed to have been shared by the suspects,” the police said.
DCI added that all the scenes were processed by Crime Scene Investigators drawn from the Nairobi Region.
The agency said efforts were underway to trace, arrest and recover the remaining stolen cash.
