Senate to hold week-long sittings in Turkana from September

NAIROBI, Kenya May 29 – Senators will hold their plenary and committee sittings in Turkana County beginning September 2023.

The outside Nairobi sittings scheduled for September 25 to 29 are subject to the House’s approval of the motion on Tuesday during its sittings.

Considering the Senate’s successful previous sittings outside of its permanent regular location in Nairobi, it is highly probable that the motion put forward by House Majority Leader Aaron Cheruiyot will pass.

These sittings, known as Senate Mashinani, took place in Uasin Gishu County in September 2018 and in Kitui County in September 2019.

Speaker Amason Kingi, who chairs the Senate Business Committee, recommended to the House that they hold sittings outside Nairobi in the counties for one week in September.

“The sessions will provide an opportunity for members and staff of county assemblies to learn and share best practices with Senators and parliamentary
officers” read in part one of the objectives contained in the motion.

Promoting the role and work of the Senate and enhancing public awareness regarding the Business of the Senate and Parliament, in general, are some of the other objectives.

The sessions further will highlight existing and new opportunities for engagement in the legislative process, and developing and strengthening partnerships at the county level of government.
