, NAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 8 – An administration block at Maseno University in Kisumu was burnt in a suspected arson attack by students on Wednesday night.

The incident caused damage to the block where the vice chancellor’s office is located and other key offices where crucial records for the university are kept.

The university’s Public Relations Officer Jasper Otieno told Capital FM News a probe was underway.

“We have not yet ascertained what caused the fire but investigations are ongoing. However, we suspect that some students were involved though I cannot say much at this point. What is remaining now is to get to the root cause of the incident and to determine the extent of the damage,” he said.

Otieno explained that the fire was put off by the fire brigade a few minutes after 8am Thursday morning.

Police officers were deployed to the university to quell any tension.

One of the students interviewed attributed the cause of the fire to intolerance due to the upcoming elections within the university.
