India, Austria discuss expanding cooperation in trade, peacekeeping and technology

Feb 28 – India’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations P Harish and Austria’s Deputy Minister of Defence Arnold Kammel have held talks on strengthening bilateral cooperation across a range of sectors, including trade, peacekeeping, technology and innovation.

According to Austria’s Permanent Mission to the UN in New York, the meeting featured a “dynamic discussion” on deepening collaboration both bilaterally and within multilateral frameworks.

Harish also welcomed the engagement, signalling continued momentum in ties between the two countries.

The discussions come shortly after India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Austrian Foreign Minister Beate Meinl-Reisinger on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference, underscoring sustained high-level engagement.

In January, Indian President Droupadi Murmu received credentials from Austria’s Ambassador to India Robert Zischg, who reaffirmed Vienna’s commitment to strengthening longstanding ties anchored in economic cooperation and people-to-people relations.

India and Austria also held their 8th Foreign Office Consultations in December, covering political engagement, trade and economic cooperation, science and technology, as well as cultural exchanges. Both sides agreed to maintain regular official engagements, with the next round set to take place in New Delhi at a mutually convenient time.

In a further push to deepen ties, Austria in September launched an initiative aimed at attracting Indian students to its technical universities to help address a growing demand for skilled labour.
