NYERI, Kenya, May 27 – Three people died after a trench they were digging while constructing a house collapsed on them in Nyeri.
According to the Mukurweini police boss Patrick Manyasi, two of them died while being rushed to hospital and one while still in the trench.
He stated that one more person is in critical condition and has been rushed to Mukurweini district hospital.
The workers according to police and eyewitness were fixing iron bars in a trench when a heap of soil buried them alive.
Manyasi said that the workers were fixing the bars for construction of the concrete wall when all of a sudden it caved.
“These workers were busy fixing bars at the trench when hell broke loose, fortunately one of them who had gone to quench his thirst saw it happen and raised an alarm which attracted members of the public who came to their rescue,” he said.
He said that residents were able to rescue the three, but one died on the spot while the other two succumbed on their way to hospital.
Area member of county assembly Antanasio Kabaire said that the area is prone to landslides.
