MKU nursing students get apprenticeships in Germany

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 28 – The third cohort of Nursing students from Mount Kenya University (MKU) have gotten apprenticeship opportunities in Germany hospitals following a partnership between the institutions and the European country.

This brings the number of Nursing students from the institution pursuing apprenticeship opportunities in Germany Hospitals to 25, after the institution sent five students in the first cohort and another eight in the second cohort.

The University’s Vice Chancellor Prof Deogratius Jaganyi said the students will depart for Germany to pursue their apprenticeship at Hochschule Koblenz University of Applied Sciences.

The VC said the students are set to benefit from invaluable experience in the global health care, offering them with unique opportunities to gain practical skills and knowledge in diverse medical settings.

He added that another 35 students have chosen to pursue their careers on this initiative and will soon get the opportunity in Cohort Four to pursue their apprenticeship in the European country.

Jaganyi added that they have another programme that provides apprenticeship opportunities in Austria through collaboration with Lebenshilfe Tirol, an organization dedicated to supporting individuals with disabilities.

A notable component of the programme is the requirement for Germany language proficiency, an initiative supported by DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) who have seconded the language’s lecturers at the University to teach the language.

The University’s Chairman of the Council Dr. Vincent Gaitho underscored the need for networks to thrive in today’s competitive world.

“We are proud of the partnerships and collaborations that enable our students to gain both academic and practical exposure, particularly in sectors that align with Kenya’s Vision 2030 and the government’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA),” he said.

Additionally, he said an AI-enabled German Language Training Program will be used, significantly enhancing learning efficiency by ensuring that even more students qualify for international apprenticeship programmes.
