A Historic Visit to India
Jimmy Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States, made a historic visit to India in 1978. During his tenure, he met with then-President Neelam Sanjiva Reddy and Prime Minister Morarji Desai. Carter also addressed the Indian Parliament, emphasizing the importance of the India-U.S. partnership.
Carter’s Passing
Carter passed away on Sunday at the age of 100 at his home in Plains, Georgia, according to The Washington Post, which cited his son, James E. Carter III. While no immediate cause of death was provided, Carter had been in hospice care since February 2023 after a series of hospital stays. He had been treated for an aggressive form of melanoma that had spread to his liver and brain.
Carter was last seen in public on October 1, 2023, during a flyover celebrating his 100th birthday, surrounded by family and friends at his home.
A Multifaceted Legacy
Jimmy Carter’s life was defined by diverse roles—peanut farmer, U.S. Navy veteran, governor of Georgia (1971–1975), and the first president from the Deep South since 1837. He was also the only Democrat elected president between Lyndon B. Johnson and Bill Clinton.
As president, Carter’s accomplishments included brokering the Camp David Accords, which led to a historic peace treaty between Israel and Egypt. This achievement earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his efforts to advance peace, democracy, and human rights.
Carter also championed the Panama Canal treaties, transferring control of the vital waterway to Panama and improving U.S. relations with Latin America.
Global Tributes
Carter’s legacy as a global peace advocate and human rights defender resonates worldwide. As the world mourns his loss, his enduring contributions to diplomacy, democracy, and humanitarian efforts continue to inspire leaders and citizens alike.
