KISUMU, Kenya, April 11 – The county government of Kisumu is distributing Sh3 million worth of fingerlings to the local fish farmers in an initiative aimed at boosting fish production in the county.
This follows a pledge by Kisumu Governor Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o in November last year of his government’s commitment to supporting farming initiatives in the county.
The fingerlings distribution targeted 90 fish farmers at Ogal beach in Kisumu West sub-county most of whom were plagued by massive death of fish in cages estimated to have led to a loss of over Sh2 million.
The governor noted that the county government had undertaken an evaluation to establish the affected beaches where the mitigation measures would be channeled where the Sh 2million of the total Sh 3 million support will be rolled out by the county government.
The Sh1 million will be used to would be to procure the fingerlings while the remaining Sh 1 million would be used to purchase the fish feeds.
The governor reiterated the commitment of the county government in supporting fish production initiatives in the county urging the fish farmers not to give up on the venture.
