KRA appoints two new commissioners to drive strategy and tax research

NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 12 – The Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) has appointed two new commissioners to strengthen its technology operations and expand its tax policy and research capacity.

The Board has named Brian Omooria Nyakeri as Commissioner for Business Strategy, Technology and Enterprise Modernization, effective January 12, 2026.

Nyakeri has more than 20 years of private-sector experience in digital transformation and enterprise systems, having previously held senior roles at Agile Cloud, IBM East Africa, Dell Technologies, Safaricom, and FHI 360.

He holds an Executive MBA from the South African Development Centre/IBM Institute for Business Value and a Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science Systems Engineering from Africa Nazarene University.

The Board has also appointed Alex Kimani Mwangi as Commissioner of the newly created Tax Research and Analysis Unit (TR&A). Mwangi joined KRA in 2002 and has held several senior positions, including Acting Commissioner for Business Strategy, Technology and Enterprise Modernisation and Deputy Commissioner for Research, Knowledge Management and Corporate Planning.

The TR&A Unit will serve as KRA’s central office for tax research, modelling, and forecasting, and will support the National Treasury with evidence-based policy analysis.

Mwangi holds Master’s and Bachelor’s degrees in Statistics from the University of Nairobi and has undertaken international training in tax policy and administration.

KRA says the appointments are part of ongoing efforts to strengthen digital systems, improve analytical capacity, and support upcoming tax administration and policy reforms.
