Canon banks on East Africa creator economy with skills development programs

Canon launches Creator Lens in Nairobi, empowering East African digital creators with training and professional tools to bridge skills gaps and monetize content in Kenya, Tanzania, and the region.

NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 20 – Canon is targeting East Africa’s burgeoning creator economy as a key growth frontier, focusing on bridging skills gaps that limit creators from turning digital content into sustainable income.

Rising mobile penetration, a youthful population, and growing demand for video content have transformed Kenya, Tanzania, and neighboring markets into high-value hubs for digital production. Yet, despite rapid growth, many creators face monetization barriers due to limited access to professional tools and training.

Speaking at the Creators Lens event in Nairobi, which convened influencers, filmmakers, photographers, podcasters, and digital creatives from across the region, Canon B2C Business Unit Director Rashad Ghani highlighted the economic importance of skills development.

“Through ‘Creator Lens’, we aim to nurture and empower a vibrant community of storytellers who are redefining content creation across Africa,” he said.

“Our goal is not only to inspire creators but also to equip them with the tools and skills they need to tell powerful visual stories, moving beyond photography and embracing the limitless possibilities of video.”

Ghani noted that Kenya’s high mobile and internet penetration made it the ideal host for the inaugural edition, adding that East African creators are gaining global visibility and increasingly shaping content trends.

Training and structured learning were a central focus of the event. Creators engaged in hands-on production setups across podcasting, fashion and lifestyle, weddings, and cinematic wildlife to mirror real commercial workflows.

“These programmes are intended to close critical skills gaps that currently hinder creators from monetizing their work at competitive levels,” Ghani said.

Canon’s initiatives, including Canon Academy, Junior Academy, and Video Academy, offer virtual and in-person masterclasses in editing, colour grading, post-production, and workflow management. By addressing these skill deficiencies, Canon is betting that better-trained creators will unlock higher earnings and drive the region’s creator economy forward.
