NAIROBI, Kenya, Sept 20 – Tourism and Wildlife Cabinet Secretary Rebecca Miano has underscored the government’s Affordable Housing Programme as a transformative initiative aimed at restoring dignity and hope to millions of Kenyans struggling to access decent shelter.
In a statement on Saturday, Miano described affordable housing as more than a government project, portraying it as a mission to uplift families and individuals who, for years, have been priced out of decent living conditions.
“Affordable housing is more than just a project; it is a mission to restore living dignity by delivering decent shelter to those who could not afford it before and providing individuals and families with a foundation for dignity, safety, and hope,” she said.
The CS appealed to salaried Kenyans to embrace their contributions towards the programme, saying they should not be seen as deductions but as opportunities to support fellow citizens.
According to her, the initiative reflects compassion and solidarity in addressing one of the nation’s most pressing social challenges.
“The contribution from those fortunate enough to have a salary and good housing is not just a deduction; it’s an opportunity to lift up our brothers and sisters who, through no fault of their own, have struggled to afford decent housing,” she explained.
Miano also took aim at critics of the project, urging them to view it as an investment in Kenya’s collective future. She argued that lifting others out of inadequate housing conditions is both a responsibility and a privilege.
“To those opposing the project, please see this as an investment in our collective future where lifting others is not just a responsibility but a privilege,” she said, stressing that no one chooses to live in poor conditions.
The CS praised President William Ruto for his bold leadership in driving the affordable housing agenda, which is a central pillar of the Kenya Kwanza administration’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA). She credited the President with demonstrating foresight and courage in prioritizing the well-being of vulnerable Kenyans.
“Kudos to Your Excellency President William Ruto for your courage and foresight in championing this initiative. It takes bold leadership to prioritize the well-being of those who have long struggled to access decent housing,” Miano stated.
The Affordable Housing Programme seeks to deliver thousands of low-cost units nationwide, with the government positioning it as a long-term solution to urban inequality and unsafe living conditions.
