AI-driven supply market tool earns Safaricom top procurement award

NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 18 – Safaricom has won the award for Best Use of Digital Technology at the Chartered Institute of Procurement and Supply (CIPS) Africa Excellence in Procurement and Supply Awards 2025.

The accolade recognizes the company’s Artificial Intelligence (AI)-powered Supply Market Analysis initiative, which delivers real-time insights into supplier landscapes, cost structures, competition, market trends, and commodity risks.

According to the telco, the system has cut market analysis timelines from nearly a month to just 10 minutes, while enhancing cost visibility and expediting tender processes.

“This award brings us closer to our vision of becoming Africa’s leading purpose-led technology company by 2030. By using AI to improve how we work, we are making our operations faster, smarter, and more innovative,” said CEO Peter Ndegwa.

Safaricom was shortlisted alongside Rohloff Group, recognized for its Energy Management initiative, and World Vision East African Region, commended for its Contract Life Cycle Management (CLM) project.

The CIPS Africa Excellence in Procurement and Supply Awards spotlight organizations that are reshaping procurement practices and setting industry benchmarks.

Safaricom’s entry stood out for embedding digital tools into core procurement operations, underscoring a growing shift towards technology-driven decision-making in Africa’s corporate sector.
