African Originals expands to Uganda, eyes Tanzania, Rwanda

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 14 – Kenya’s craft spirits brand African Originals has announced its entry into the Ugandan market.

Its CEO, Alexandra Chappatte, said that the company is keen on niche sales as it takes on its competitors in the East African nation.

“The biggest strategy we have put is to enter this market the right way and not put too much pressure on large sales, we will focus on a smaller market launch rather than larger ones,” she said.

“We consider Uganda a strong alcohol-drinking nation that loves sweet strong drinks.”

She disclosed that the craft beverages producer is keen on setting a presence in neighboring Tanzania and Rwanda as it spreads across the East African region.

The company had last year raised $2 million (Sh258.6 million) in funding for expansion in the region.

This was spearheaded by a Mauritius-based brewer, Phoenix Beverages.

African Originals produces ciders, gins, and mixers as well as iced teas.

Founded in 2018, African Originals has pushed the envelope in creating craft beverages that celebrate the richness of African ingredients and traditions.

The brand is renowned for its sustainability and community empowerment, partnering with local farmers to source mangoes from Makueni, passion fruits from Eldoret, baobab from Kilifi, and mint from Kiambu, as well as botanicals from the Maasai community.
