NAIROBI, Kenya, Nov 3 – Airtel is set to expand its 5G network to cover 32 counties in the country as demand for fast internet grows.
This will see the telco extend its 5G sites from 15 devolved units currently to 32. Now in 180 wards, it will reach 221 wards after the expansion.
Areas that will benefit from the coverage include Nairobi, Kiambu, Mombasa, Nakuru, Uasin Gishu, Machakos, Kisumu, Kilifi, Kajiado, Kwale, Kakamega, Bomet, Embu, Homabay, and Kericho.
Others are Kirinyaga, Laikipia, Meru, Busia, Garissa, Migori, Bungoma, Muranga, Kisii, Kitui, Makueni, Taita Taveta, Tana River, Nyamira, Nyeri, Siaya, and Nyandarua.
The aim of the initiative is to offer customers high-speed, low-latency, and seamless connections between several devices.
“The 5G network is more about faster internet, connecting people, businesses, and communities in ways that were once unimaginable,” said Airtel Kenya Managing Director Ashish Malhotra.
“Our commitment to innovation and connectivity remains unwavering, and we’re excited to be a part of this new era of possibilities,” said Malhotra.
The telecommunications company, on July 6, 2023, introduced its first 5G network in Kenya by unveiling 372 sites.
The high cost of 5G devices and data plans has, however, limited mass adoption of the service in the country.
With Sh3,500 per month, enterprises and SMEs can access 5G networks with an unlimited package through Airtel.
Plans to extend 5G coverage across the country are the top priority for the telco.
