NAIROBI, Kenya, Aug 11- Housing Principal Secretary Charles Hinga has urged Kazi Mtaani youths who have not received their pay to contact County Implementation Committees.
In a statement, Hinga said some workers’ details may have had errors which resulted in their payments not going through.
Hinga has assured that County Implementation Committees will capture their details including name, identification number and phone number, which will be verified against returns from the paying agency and legitimate claims will thereafter be processed for immediate payment.
“Payments for workers under the Kazi Mtaani program are made via mobile money and it has been noted that some workers details may have had errors which resulted in their payments not going through. Workers who have not received payments have been advised to contact County Implementation Committees (CICs) through stated channels of communication in the program,” Hinga stated.
Hinga is responding to protests from a section of Kazi Mtaani youths over delayed salaries.
The program, which is spearheaded by the State Department of Housing and Urban Development, is geared at integrating jobless Kenyans in urban hygiene and sanitation works across 23 informal settlements.
The program provides employment and daily wages for low-income workers living informal settlements while improving urban infrastructure and service delivery within informal settlements.
The first phase of the Kazi Mtaani program saw the enlisting of 26,148 Kenyans living in informal settlements undertake rapid environment improvements and sanitation management.
The program provides opportunities for citizens above the age of eighteen (18) of all genders provided they reside in the target informal settlements.
Under the program, enlisted workers will earn a daily wage and undertake duties such as ‘street’ cleaning, fumigation and disinfection, garbage collection, Bush clearance and drainage unclogging services, among others.
