Going Full-Time: Julia Gaitho’s Move from Employment to Full-Time Content Creator

On the second episode of the iMarket Podcast, Carolyne Kendi and Paula Kerre were joined by Julia Gaitho, also known as Jules. You may know her from her YouTube Channel “Over 25” but she is much more than that!

Her educational background is unique, encompassing a Master of Arts from the University of Greenwich, London in Strategic Marketing Communication and a Bsc from USIU Kenya in International Business Administration. She has over 7 years of diverse strategic marketing and business product development experience with roles in Fast Moving Consumer Goods (Coca Cola Africa and Diageo) and Experiential Marketing & Supply (Pelo) to Above TheLine with the Best Mix of Music, Capital Fm Group.

Things to Consider When Leaving Employment to Become a Full-Time Content Creator:

Start Where You Are.

“When abroad, there was content that inspired me to create my own when I got home.” Jules told Kendi, “there was only a handful of creators at the time; “This is Ess” “Our Two Cents” and the like… When we started “Over25” it was recording on a phone, in front of a mirror. No ring light and no tripod stand!”
Don’t wait until everything is aligned for you to begin creating content for the digital space. You have to start where you are and build from there, all you can do is grow and you won’t if the excuse is that you don’t have equipment or you don’t know how to edit. Just start.

Irregular Income

When you have an irregular income, but regular expenses, you have to be very careful about how you spend your money. Coming from being employed and expecting a salary at the end of every month to self-employment is not for everyone.

Now that you have moved to full-time content creation, you need to treat it like a job. Organise your time and money to work for you and take note of the difference in income – some months will be better than others.

Entrepreneurship

As Jules put it, “Not everyone is built for entrepreneurship. Not everyone is built for employment.” We’re all different and what works for one doesn’t work for another. There is no right way or one way to make a living.

Research what you’ll need to go into self-employment before diving in. You have to be disciplined and love what you do in order to keep moving in this space. Have a positive attitude, because being an entrepreneur is not easy.

Community

Start with what you have and have a support system. You will need to build your team to avoid going through the journey alone and while you think you will need to get everything done all at once, building a brand online takes time and you will need support!

Know Your Worth

The Digital Marketing works because you can see the metrics. You are able to measure insights and conversations the data into reasons why people would invest or spend on you. When you post and you see how many “liked”, “commented”, and “shared” your content, you are able to know exactly how much you can charge to get the engagement you want.

A newspaper ad could be a million shillings yet you won’t know how many people actually saw it. So know your worth. As long as you have an audience you can get an income and you shouldn’t be afraid of charging what you know you deserve because you know what went into that creation.
