The Importance of Attitude and Life Experiences in Career Growth

Joel Rao, the C.E.O of Dentsu Digital Brands and Co-founder of Africa Creative Agency, shared his insights on building a successful career on the latest iMarket Podcast episode.

As a professional with a passion for helping others reach their goals through digital technology and practical solutions to complex challenges, Rao believes in turning customers into fanatics, products into obsessions, employees into ambassadors, and brands into religions. He is also a member of the Un-Stereotype Alliance, an organization working to challenge biases and stereotypes in advertising, particularly those against women.

Rao shared that his own journey in the industry began when he saw an ad online while in high school, sparking his interest in becoming a software engineer. He later got his start in marketing by selling bank accounts, and emphasized the importance of surrounding oneself with successful individuals and having the right attitude in order to build the necessary skillset.

Rao also emphasized the value of life experiences in personal and professional growth, stating that one does not need to be physically present in a classroom or hold a degree from a tertiary institution in order to secure a high-paying job. Instead, he focuses on hiring individuals with the right attitude, and believes that courage is crucial in advancing one’s career.

With these points in mind, here are three ways to build yourself professionally, as shared by Joel Rao:

  1. Stay hungry and never become complacent. Having the right attitude can help you build the necessary skill set.
  2.  Network with successful individuals and surround yourself with people who have gone ahead of you in their careers.
  3. Tap into your own inner drive and have faith in yourself. Align yourself with a larger purpose to give you the mental capacity to believe in your goals.

Overall, Joel Rao’s words serve as a reminder that a successful career is not only about formal education and specific skills, but also about having the right mindset, surrounding oneself with supportive individuals, and believing in one’s own potential.
