NAIROBI, Kenya, Dec 20 – Kenya Airways has sent 157 sacked employees on compulsory leave barely two days after the Employment and Labour Relations Court reinstated them pending hearing of their case.
This comes as the appeal by the national carrier against the decision is set to be heard on Wednesday.
According to Kenya Airways, “the decision by the court was one-sided as it did not involve input from either the carrier or independent experts.”
While giving the ruling, Justice Hellen Wasilwa had cited safety concerns saying passengers will be travellers flying on planes that have not been serviced.
The technical staff were dismissed after they downed their tools over pay and the national carrier advertised for their positions.
Lawyer Dismas Wambola who was representing the sacked engineers and technicians had urged the court to order their reinstatement arguing that during the festive season they ought to be at work.
KQ’s prayer to have the matter adjourned to enable it respond to its actions was rejected and was instead given up to Tuesday to do so.
The sacked technical staff moved to court last week to contest their dismissal without being offered the right to be heard.
