KWALE Kenya 25 – The government is set to upgrade the Ukunda Airstrip in order to increase tourist traffic in Kwale County.

Kwale Country Governor Salim Mvurya says his administration is in talks with the national government on the plans to make the airstrip a fully fledged Airport.

“The ferry is a big challenge and inhibits travelers, we are meeting with the Transport and Infrastructure Principal Secretary this week, to lay down the plans,” he said.

Mvurya says that already they have identified a place to relocate the school located close to the airstrip.

“We were supposed to do this earlier but the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) fire in August derailed us,” he explained.

He also says his government is in the process of fast tracking the Ukunda by-pass in order to ease the entry in to the county.

“We have a lot of tourist attractions in this county, and we are putting up infrastructure that will facilitate the growth of tourism,” he said.
